Morning Map. What does the day ahead look like from here?
Tess Okonkwo has been my friend since the second week of undergrad, which is nearly fourteen years, and I realised at the studio tonight that I have never written anything about how that works. She is a school counsellor at Asheville High. She did not follow me here — she got here first, in 2017, and the fact that she was here is about forty percent of why we chose Asheville, which I have never told her and which she probably knows. What makes it work is that she does not manage me. Everybody else in my life does a version of management: Danny solves, my mother reassures, Priyanka has a professional frame, Hannah compares. Tess just receives the thing and leaves it on the table. She is also the only person who knew about the Feldman year at the time, in anything like real time, because she rang on the Thursday and I had been crying and could not get it together fast enough. So there is exactly one person who got the unsanded version, and she got it by accident, by ringing at the wrong moment.
