Evening Mirror. Looking back, what stayed with you?

At the Hendersons' tonight somebody asked Danny whatever happened with you and Greg, because of course they did, because Asheville is a village with a brewery. Danny did the short version. Partnership ended, he went to Charlotte, it's fine, these things run their course. I watched my own hand not reach for my glass. Then I said something pleasant and we moved on to somebody's kitchen renovation, and I was completely fine for the rest of the evening, genuinely, I was good company. Twenty-five minutes of silence in the car on the way home, which for us is a conversation. Neither of us put the radio on either. At the lights on Haywood he said, that was a weird question, and I said, it's fine, and that was the entire discussion of it. Four years ago in June.

He opened it at the lights and you closed it. What would the next sentence have been?

I do not know. That is the honest answer and it is also a bit alarming. I have had four years to work out what the next sentence is and I have not got one, which I suspect is the actual reason I keep saying it's fine, rather than any of the considerate explanations I have given myself.
