Finished the porch rail. Six months after I started it, two hours at a time, badly, with a scraper that was wrong for the job for the first three sessions until Danny quietly swapped it. It is not a good job. Up close you can see where I went across the grain in a couple of places and the primer is heavier on the left than the right because I got impatient in September. From the street it looks completely fine. Danny came out while I was cleaning the brushes and stood looking at it for a while with his arms folded, which is his assessment posture, and then said: that's going to hold. I think he meant the rail. We sat on the step for a while afterwards with the dog between us and did not say anything much, and it was the best twenty minutes of the month.
