COMMITMENT
Raising it with Danny when he is back

What you committed to
You raised it yourself rather than waiting to be asked again, and you had written it down because the things that stay in your head do not happen. You said it at about half nine on the couch with the television off, and you did not use any of the four paragraphs you had drafted in the car.
How you are holding it
The conversation did not finish. You got about a third of the way through it, both fell asleep on the couch and woke at one with the dog on the floor looking disgusted. Nothing concrete moved. The roof is still eight, Caldwell is still paused, the appointment is still not booked, and he has still not said a date for anything.
What changed is that each of you now knows what the other's silence meant. Before he left for Hendersonville he made coffee, put it on your side of the bed and said you are doing the rest of this at the weekend, not asking, saying.

“What is different is one thing only, and it is this: I know what he thought my silence meant. And he knows what his not-raising-it meant to me.”
