PRACTICE
Six o'clock on Sundays

What the practice is
The weekly call to your parents, fixed at six on a Sunday so it could not drift, and kept for seven years whether or not the conversation is any good.
How it serves you
It started as a practical fix when you moved down here, because your mother is not a texter and your father is not a phone person, and without a fixed time it would have shrunk to Christmas and birthdays inside a year. Twenty minutes, mostly weather and the Wilcoxes and whatever Hannah has sent them a photo of. You have stopped expecting it to be a good conversation, and what it has given you instead is that you know things about your parents your friends do not know about theirs.
