PATTERN
Mistaking the quiet for the result

What it is
You stopped discussing it and then took the silence as proof it was forgiven, which is a completely different operation and one you would spot in a client in a single session.
How it affects your life
The tell is the checking. You do not keep going back to something you have finished with, so the fact that it is still being checked is the evidence that the forgiveness never happened. What is uncomfortable about seeing it is not guilt or shame but the scale of the self-deception, carried out by somebody with the exact training required to catch it.
