A worn armchair by a rainy window, a notebook open on the arm

By Thursday, Tuesday is already gone.

You are already doing the work. The week disappears before the session, and whatever you worked out on a Tuesday is not there when you need it. This keeps it, in your words, and you can send a piece of it to the person you are seeing.

This is not therapy and it is not a replacement for it. It is a journal that notices things. It does not diagnose, it does not advise, and nobody has studied whether it helps.

The week

By Thursday, Tuesday is gone

Something happened on Tuesday that you meant to raise. By the time you are in the room it has gone soft, or it has gone entirely, and what comes out instead is the most recent thing.

People recall roughly a fifth to a third of a session afterwards. That is well documented and it is not a failure of attention. It goes both ways: therapists forget too.

The room

Eloquent on the way there, blank once you arrive

You know this one. The entire conversation arrives fully formed on the train home, twenty minutes too late.

I am super eloquent in my head, then my mind blanks, my speech becomes jumbled and I forget important things that I should tell her.

Writing it down somewhere that holds it does not make you articulate in the room. It means the thing exists outside your head, and you can hand it over rather than perform it.

You already tried this

The notes app is not a bad idea

Plenty of people keep a running note for the week and it half works. It is genuinely the right instinct.

I have a notes page in my phone for each week where I just write down bulletpoints of stuff.
r/TalkTherapy

Where it tends to come apart is also well described.

I would write my shit down but then it would just go on and on and on. It spans so many different topics I do not even know where to start.
r/TalkTherapy

The difference here is that something reads it back. A reply while you write, a reflection at the end, and a map that notices when the same thing has come up four times without you flagging it.

Telling it again

Your story, already told once

New therapist, or a second one, or coming back after a gap. The part people describe is not the paperwork.

I am getting tired of repeating my story over and over. Every time I say it again I feel like a part of me drains away.
r/TalkTherapy

A card on your map is a thing you can hand somebody. It is in your words, you wrote it, and you can read it and change it before anybody sees it. That last part matters, because the objection to notes being passed along is not about sharing.

She may come in to our sessions with a pre-conceived notion that might affect her therapeutic judgment.

What you send

One entry, one card, or the week

A link. They do not need an account, they do not get a login, and nothing reaches them automatically.

The week is a short account of a stretch of your writing: what happened, what came up more than once with your own sentences under it, what you said is still open, and two or three things worth asking about. It is written to be read in under two minutes, because that is what somebody will actually read before a session.

You can turn any link off, and every copy of it stops working.

Going round

Covering the same ground

Circling is a named thing and clinicians describe it in almost identical language, from Groundhog Day therapy to rehashing the same situations week after week. It is more common than it is talked about.

Rehashing old problems and basically going in circles, and the therapists just kind of let me do that. I just feel like I wasted my time.
r/TalkTherapy

A map does not stop you circling. It makes the circle visible: the same card, four quotes, four different months. What you do with that is yours and your therapist's.

Yours

Nobody sees anything you did not send

  • Nothing is shared with anybody, including your therapist, unless you send it.
  • Every link is revocable, and turning it off breaks every copy at once.
  • Delete any entry, or everything, whenever you want.
  • Export all of it, whenever you want.
  • Never used to train anything.
  • You can run it on your own machine if you would rather it never left.

Make the hour count.

Not by doing homework. By having the week still be there when you get to it.
